Hastings High School recently released its literary magazine Oneirata, an annual end-of-year tradition that began in 2005. "Oneirata" is a derivation of the Greek word "oneira", meaning "dreams".
According to Creative Writing Club Advisor Sarah Walters, any high school student may submit their writing to the literary magazine.
"The work might come from Creative Writing or English class, but all the same, is written independently by students," she said. "Our seniors often help pair artwork with the written pieces to create a theme and reinforce the ideas presented."
Below is a note from Walters about the development of Oneirata, which can also be found on page two of the magazine:
Putting together the literary magazine is one of my favorite end-of-year traditions. It reminds us in a real, tangible way what learning and school is all about: it’s a place to express ourselves, share our work and (hopefully!) receive accolades for putting ourselves out there.
Unlike final tests and papers, the magazine is a public sharing of creative talents, and I thank all of you who submitted your work. Oneirata comes from the Greek word for dreams, oneira, and many of these pieces mirror as sort of reflective or dream-like state. I hope you enjoy the artwork and writing displayed here. Lastly, I’d like to thank Louis Bagtas who helped me put this magazine together. Have a wonderful summer and think about submitting to the magazine next year!
